"It is not your environment, it is you, the quality of your minds, the integrity of your souls, and the determination of your wills that mil decide your future and shape your lives."
Maltbie D. Babcock
Kudos to Emmanuel Kashimbiri, an eleventh grader for exhibiting excellent leadership skills in chairing an outstanding seminar for parents and students.
Each year the Los Angeles NAACP Youth Council hosts an informational seminar which is called "Ed Prep."
The members carefully plan the structure of Ed Prep by inviting instructors, education administrators and supporters that they have endorsed as providers of pertinent information that all students and parents need to hear.
This year, solicited the following panelists: Ms. Vivian Jones, a library media teacher; Mrs. Angela Frierson, an elementary counselor; Mr. Mjenzi Ujamaa a high school counselor; Ms. Susan William, a school physiologist; Mr. Harry Fullmore, UNCF program director; Tavis Collier, middle school principal; Mrs. LaVern Brunt, high school principal; Mr. Clark Vanish, college math professor; Mr. Nathan Hutchinson, a probation supervisor; Mr. Mjenzi Ujamaa, a high school counselor; Mr. Edward Fletoher, an advocate for educating young african americans, also a school nurse and a high school teacher; Mr. Mandla Kayise, cochair of the Alliance for Equal Opportunity in Education.
He played a critical leadership role in the campaign, which led to a 63 percent increase in African American students admitted and a 100 percent increase in African American students enrolling at UCLA for the Fall 2007.
The number of parents that accompanied their children was the highlight of the seminar. This substantiates that African American parents do care about educating their children.
The parents directed many questions to all of the panelists and were able to get answers as well as information to get additional help or answers to unanswered questions.
Many of the youth have a desire to attend Historical Black Colleges and Universities. Mr. Harry Fullmore was able to answer questions about certain programs and scholarships that are available at these institutions.
Ms. Vivian Jones went beyond reading library books, she explained the importance of utilizing reference materials found in local libraries. She also indorsed the use of the internet.
To have Mrs. Brunt, principal of USC Magnet School on the panel was truly an asset She has expertise in both middle and high school as an administrator. Then there was another "take" on disseminating information to the audience. "Throughout the years, I have served as an advisor for the NAACP Youth Council."
"I am fortunate to have a unique relationship with some who were my Mentees. Most of these young people were with me at the beginning of my tenure as Youth Council Advisor."
"It was easy for me to contact: Thomas Home, a Morehouse graduate, Thaddeus Home III, a graduate of American University, Dr. Hilary Wilson MD, Eze Burts III, a graduate of USC, Myisha Moody a graduate of Loyola University at Chicago, Keven White, a graduate of Northridge University, Kiystal Greene, a graduate of USC and Brandon Kiel, a graduate of Florida A & M."
These panelists talked about college life, how to cope with being away from home, college adjustments, roommate syndrome, time management, budgeting, seeking scholarships and most importantly, responsibility.
You must be responsible forgetting to class on time, your personal property and you must be responsible for your own success. Parents directed more questions to the young panel members than the youth.
All of the panelists agreed that today's youth must be prepared; academically, physically, socially, emotionally and morally in order to meet the challenges that they are confronted with in this society.
Attendance, attention, attitude and appreciation are tools that are needed in order to attain your academic goal.
